January 18, 1974 -
The sci-fi series, The Six Million Dollar Man, starring Lee Majors, premiered on the ABC-TV on this date.



The aircraft seen crashing in the show's opening sequence was an M2-F2, a "lifting body configuration" built by Northrop. The audio sound effects are from a crash that occurred on May 10, 1967, at Edwards Air Force base in California. The test pilot, Bruce Peterson, hit the ground at 250 mph, tumbling six times. He lost use of his right eye and had to stop flying, ending his career. Understandably, Peterson has said that he hated reliving his accident, week after week, courtesy of the show.

Fortunately Sherman Helmsley was able to move on up - the case of his dueling heirs was finally resolved.  On November 9, 2012,  the legal battle over Sherman Hemsley's estate ended when a judge ruled in favor of Hemsley's business partner, Flora Isela Enchinton and she moved to have Hemsley finally buried on November 21, 2012, several months after his death.
